WOODRUFF — A new memorial honoring local veterans is coming to McKinney Park near downtown.
Construction on the project, which will be done in phases, is scheduled to begin in early 2025. It’s been in the planning stages for almost seven years. Plans were presented to City Council in late August. The city has agreed to allow the memorial to be built at the park, which is already a popular destination for residents. The park, which includes an amphitheater for live music and other events, is among several of the city’s attractions.
The memorial will cost about $500,000 and be paid for through private donations. The memorial site was recently surveyed and fundraising is underway. Woodruff Police Chief Greg Ryan, who is chairman of the committee formed to push the project forward, told The Post and Courier the memorial will feature several components. The project’s first phase, which is expected to cost $60,000, is set to start next year.
